Smashan (Sanskrit for “bed for a corpse”) is a place where last rituals and cremation of the dead bodies are performed. It is believed that lots of ghosts, evil spirits, ferocious deities and tantrics live at smashan. Followers of Vamamarga such as Aghori, Kaula, Kashmiri Shivaism, etc., come to smashan to perform their rituals there. Only dombas and chandals can live at smashan. The exception is Shri Shailendra Sharma who has been living sattvic life at Govardhan smashan since 1993.
